Assange Greeted by Wife and Father at Canberra Airport
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has landed in Canberra, Australia, after reaching a plea deal with US authorities. A charter flight carrying Assange and his legal team left Saipan at approximately 10:1 pm local time and arrived in Canberra at 7:38 pm tonight. Assange was greeted by his wife, Stella Assange, and his father, John Shipton.
At a news conference held after his arrival, Assange expressed his gratitude for the support he has received and pledged to continue his fight for transparency and freedom of information.
Stella Assange also spoke at the news conference, thanking those who have stood by her husband during his long legal battle. She expressed hope that Assange's return to Australia would mark a new chapter in his life.
Assange was arrested in London in 2019 and extradited to the United States to face charges of conspiracy to hack into government computer systems. He was sentenced to five years in prison but has now been released after serving part of his sentence.
The plea deal reached between Assange and US authorities has not been publicly disclosed. However, it is believed that Assange agreed to provide information to US investigators in exchange for a reduced sentence.
